- Book Fair in Salalah is going on now! The Ministry of Heritage and Culture is hosting the annual Book Fair. They have a pretty impressive collection of books in Arabic and English. I was really surprised and grateful to find so many wonderful books right here in Salalah. The prices are fantastic too. If you have children don't miss out on grabing some great resources. The Book Fair will be on until April 10th I believe? Go check it out!
- Center Point is still having its 10 day "sale". Its the only place to really get shoes for little ones. I went last night and couldn't find parking. I waited nearly 15 minutes for someone to pull out and attempted to buy some shoes for the boys. A stampede of
pious women clad in black, nearly killed me. I got jumped maybe three times at the check-out counter, I walked out without the shoes. Don't go too late in the evening its a madhouse.
- Max is having sale too. Parking is RIDICULOUS. People are parking on the highway, leaving their children waiting in the car. But during the day its totally desolate.
- Ladies!! I hear a new gym opened up in Sa'ada. Word is that it is better than any other gym in town. There is a weight room, aerobics studio, a child-minding area where you can drop your tot while you sweat, a full spa, and a theatre! I was told that AVATAR was playing on the big screen! If anyone gets a look, please let me know. I might be tempted to drive out to Sa'ada and check it out myself.
Thats all for now folks. I'll be checking out the Grand Mosque for the first time tomorrow. I'm excited =)
Happy First Day of the Week
Thanks for all the info!!! As expats we hardly get any information about the goings on in Salalah - and if we do, it's usually through a comment about the affair by one of our local colleagues well after the event.
ReplyDeleteI love books and would love to go to the book fair - could you tell us where it is taking place? Also, love shopping - who doesn't? - so I'll definitively check out both sales :) ... so happy ... !
And the new gym/spa/theatre - what can I say? Definitively have to check that out ... particularly curious about the spa ... any idea where in Sa'ada?
Again, thanks! Your little update just made my day ... and, probably, my week! :)
Totally agree! I read some time ago on Nadias blog that there was an art exhibition next to KFC and when I went to look for it it was already over. Too bad because I would have loved to see some real Dhofari art.
ReplyDeleteSuggestion Sleepless: there's a website for Salalah Expats. http://www.salalahexpats.com Could it be an idea for you to keep us up to speed with events on that site? :-)
Hey! Maybe I can tag along to the Grand Mosque?
ReplyDeleteAs for the other readers, the Book Fair is in the headquarters of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture right between the Women's Association & Governor of Dhofar's Office.
The gym in Saada is right next to the roundabout before the big Saada public park.
Rania thanx for posting this. I checked out the Book Fair and was able to find some books for my children. Both my kids attend the British School and they do a terrible job at teaching! I find myself having to incorporate supplemental work for my kids to keep them to par with their peers back home. It was such a relief to finally find books worth investing in!
ReplyDeleteI spent 27rials and it was worth every penny! If you look at the listed price of each book you will see that you really are getting a discount. I also picked up a few books in Arabic to get the kids familiar with the alphabet and numbers, something to keep them busy when they lament how bored they are in Salalah.
thanx again!
@ Anonymous: What's wrong with the British School in Salalah?????? And why are your kids bored in Salalah???? Should people who are thinking about moving to Salalah be worried about education/ things to do for their kids?

WOW its good to know that I am not alone.
ReplyDeleteMoving from USA to salalah was a terrible mistake for my kids schooling. I've tried almost every private school in salalah, I even paid $1000 upfront and i took my kids out of that school fallowing week due to lack of behavior,
I am now enrolled home school back in USA and I am having an issue too but we committed to teach our kids at home rather than salalah private school.
